Community Profile

The non-treaty community of Brochet is adjacent to the reserve community of Brochet, located on the Barren lands Indian Reserve, near the north end of Reindeer Lake. Brochet is approximately 121 km by air north of Lynn Lake and the western edge of the province. Although internal roads exist, there are onlywinter road or air links to the rest of the province. Some water transportation occurs from Co-op Point just inside Saskatchewan. The community of Brochet is represented by a mayorand council under The Northern Affairs Act. 

 

Education

 

The BrochetSchool is operated byFrontier School Division. The principal supervises 10 teachers plus support staff.

Emergency Services:

 

Health Care

Medical response is from the federal nursingstation with six beds, staffed by three nurses. The nearest hospital is Lynn Lakeand requires air transportation services.

 

Police

Police response is from the Lynn Lakedetachment, phone 356-2494, on a fly-in basis. RCMP have overnightaccommodation in the community. There is also a community constable forimmediate response.

 

Fire Protection

Fire fighting capability is based on afast-response vehicle fully equipped. There is also a water trailer withforestry-style portable pump and hoses. The trailer is pulled by a tractor.

Water supply

Water is pumped from ReindeerLake, filtered, chlorinated and distributed by pipeline to thecommunity.

 

Electricity

Provided by Manitoba Hydro as enhanced dieselelectric power. Service capacity is limited to 60A per household. Residential rateis based on zone 3 levels. Office is located at Lynn Lake.

 

Sewage Disposal

A solid waste site is located near the community.Sewage collection lines currently pipe the sewage to a lagoon.

 

Communications

Manitoba Telecom Services provides digitalsatellite communication service to Brochet. Call MTS toll-free at 225-5687.

 

Transportation

  • Northern Manitoba Airports operate a 3,000'x90' gravel remote-controlled lighted airstrip about half a mile from the community. Office is located in Winnipeg. Gardewine North Transport service Brochet by air from Thompson, or by winter road through Lynn Lake.
  • Calm Air provides scheduled air transport to Lynn Lake and Thompson.
  • Skyward provides charter service based in Thompson.
